What are TenMarks Writing Assignments?
TenMarks Writing Assignments are short sets of interactive practice questions that target specific writing or language skills for grades 4-8. Assignments are automatically graded, providing you with essential data to help inform next steps in writing instruction and skill development.
How can I create Writing Assignments?
1. Select the “Work” tab.
2. Click “Class Assignments.”
3. Click “Create New.”
4. Choose to assign to the current class, multiple classes, or selected students.
5. Click “Find by Topic” to choose the writing or language topic.
6. Select the dates/times to open and close the assignment.
7. Click “Create.”
Clicking the “Find by Topic” button (see step 5 above) allows you to create an Assignment from any grade level. You can use assignments from other grades to differentiate for students who need additional review or a challenge.
How can I use Writing Assignments?
Writing Assignments provide targeted practice on specific writing and language skills. Skills include higher-order composition skills such as crafting strong topic sentences or adding sentence variety, as well as language mechanics skills such as forming compound sentences or identifying dull versus vivid verbs.
Consider using Writing Assignments to:
- Personalize learning by easily identifying where students are struggling and assigning them tailored practice.
- Gather formative assessment data from automatically graded assignments to plan for instruction based on student needs.
- Save time with ready-to-go assignments for targeting student practice on key writing and language skills.
What is the Writing Assignment experience like for students?
Student Assignments are found in the “Class Work” section of their Home Page, below Bursts. Within each Assignment, interactive questions engage students and challenge them to think about how ideas and language fit together.
Students receive immediate feedback, including an explanation for incorrect answers. If students answer a question incorrectly they can try again, fostering a growth mindset and the habit of learning from mistakes. (Allowing a second attempt is the default setting—you can deselect this option when creating the Assignment). Students earn points for completing assignments, which they can “spend” in the TenMarket, motivating them to practice more.
After submitting a TenMarks Writing Assignment, students receive overall feedback and can see their results in the “Reports” section of their account.
How can I monitor student progress?
TenMarks reporting allows you to track your student progress at the class and individual level. You can access detailed Assignment performance on the “Assignment Details” page by navigating to the “Class Assignments” tab and clicking the specific assignment title. Assignment performance will be displayed for those students who have completed the assignment.
